2. Department Overview
Brief description of the department:
The Department of Fisheries function under Government of Assam and is responsible for the development and management of fisheries resources of Baksa district. The department works to promote fish production, improve livelihood of fish farmers and ensure sustainable use of aquatic resources. The department plays an important role in strengthening the rural economy of the district through fisheries and sustainable aquaculture practises.
Established Date: 2nd January 2005
Core functions and responsibilities:
1. Resource Development & Management
- Development of inland Fisheries viz. ponds, rivers, beelsetc
- Stocking of fish seeds/fingerlings in water bodies.
- Conservation of aquatic biodiversity and prevention of overfishing.
2.Aquaculture Promotion.
- Encouraging scientific fish farming (pond culture, cage culture, biofloc, etc.).
- Providing technical guidance to farmers.
- Promoting integrated Fish farming system (fish + poultry, fish + agriculture).
3. Financial Support & Schemes
- Implementation of government schemes (subsidies, loans, insuranceetc).
- Support under programs like PradhanMantriMatsyaSampadaYojana.
- Assistance for pond construction, fish seed and fish feed
